What is addiction?
Addiction is a disease of the body, mind, and spirit which causes extreme disruption of an individual's life. Against all reason, people with addiction seek out and continue to use dangerous substances despite negative consequences. This often leaves everyone (family, friends, and patient) frustrated. Despite some treatments, persons with addiction are at risk for relapse adding to the frustration and sense of hopelessness. Additionally, persons with this problem often hide their disorder and allow it to continue to devastate their life due to the societal stigma. However, similar to other chronic diseases, drug addiction can be managed successfully. Research shows that combining addiction treatment medications with behavioral therapy is the best way to ensure success for most patients. Treatment approaches that are tailored to each patient's drug abuse patterns and any co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and social problems can lead to recovery and a life without the shackles of drug abuse.
